RED TORNADO. DC Comics’ most boring character and my fascination. I have this thing where the more chronically mishandled a character is, the more I like ‘em. I have a soft-spot for the disasters.
These are two designs for Red Tornado, the top two are obviously just me messing around and doodling a fun little robot guy. I like him, whatever the case.
Having done those, I got the hankering to try a quick, legit redesign of Tornado - I’m always a sucker for heavy industry robot designs (see Robotman in the 90s for some of my favorites, for instance), but Tornado needs to have a semi-human element, so I compromised and gave him big industrial fan arms and a costume that looks like footie pajamas. I liked the idea of his costume hanging really loose on him and the mechanical arms looking like shambles, so he appears to be as much like an awkwardly assembled doll or puppet as anything else. I’d love to see pieces fall off of him, his costume getting caught on nails and things, maybe revealing nothing more than a mannequin body underneath …
